The Impact of Founding Era Ideals on the Civil War and Reconstruction
This session will present a model that helps students to engage with primary sources by exploring how the Founding Era ideals impacted the Civil War and Reconstruction. Participants will discuss the value and challenges of using primary sources and share best practices for integrating them into their curriculum.   Participants will receive copies of primary sources from teachingamericanhistory.org  with discussion questions.

The Drama of U.S. History and Government
This workshop offers a four pronged theatre- based approach to teaching U.S. history using primary sources, theatre, global religious texts, and excerpts from Shakespeare. Students will explore and perform as they identify the role of major world religions in the development of the United States, the emergent dehumanization of various populations, and the impact of Shakespeare and theatre on America.

Using Contemporary Music to Develop a Socio-Political Consciousness and to Create Change
Participants will engage in an inquiry-driven approach that examines societal issues/barriers found in contemporary music including hip hop. Instructional strategies designed to help students explore issues historically/currently in music, to analyze perspectives and biases, and to discover their voice as a catalyst for civic change will be discussed along with tools and resources to enable participants to replicate the lesson.
