Alexander von Humboldt pioneered the disciplines of biogeography and New World archaeology. Humboldt simply showed latitude and altitude mirror each other. He mapped life at each vegetation zone and also pioneered exploration of Inca and Aztec cities.

Teachers and students can easily apply Humboldt’s observations: 1) What vegetation zones are in California? 2) Why? 3) Where is the tree line?
